Hall of Giants

Picture: Hall of Giants

On the second upper floor of the west wing is the Hall of Giants, a magnificent festival hall from the time of Duke Albrecht (r. 1680-1699) with impressive Baroque stucco-work by the Italians Carlo Domenico and Bartolomeo Luchese. The name Hall of Giants is derived from the massive caryatid figures supporting the entablature. The panels on the ceiling show allegories of the arts and sciences. In the cavetto under the ceiling, the 56 coats of arms of former dominions of the House of Wettin underline the importance of this dynasty. The mirrors on the window piers, added much later in 1817 under Duke Ernst I (r. 1806-1844), enhance the splendour of the Baroque hall.
